Looking for the tomb of Roxane

In 327 B.C., Roxane, the daughter of Oxyartes, was married to Alexander the Great and soon after she gave birth to their son, also named Alexander.

It is said that, tomorrow, archaeologists will initiate archaeological investigation on the hill of 'Kasta' at Amphipolis, in order to unearth the tomb of Roxane and that of her 13 year old son. Excavations are conducted by archaeologists of the 'KH' Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Σερρών' (i.e. the local 'eforeia'). Research on site will be accompanied by survey and geophysics.

The site was also investigated from 1956 to 1985 by Greek Archaeologist Dimitris Lazarides.

Along with this dig, there will be a second dig in the area, for the discovery of the Ancient theatre of Amfipolis.
